Infotech Oulu Intensive Course

Visible Light Communications VLC

TIme: 9-16
Venue: TA 105 - please note THE CHANGE OF VENUE. For the location se the attached map.

The aim of this course is to provide a basic understanding of visible light communications. A comparison between radio and optical systems will also be provided. The course will study the following areas of optical communications:

a) optical sources, optical detectors, and other optical components

b) transmitters, receivers, signal processing,

c) optical channel and its characterization,

d) Novel enabling technologies (e.g., optical MIMO)

e) challenges and opportunities,

f) practical systems using visible light communications.

Dominic O’Brien is a professor in engineering science at the University of Oxford, and leads the optical wireless communications group. He gained M.A. (1991) and Ph.D. (1993) degrees from the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge. From 1993 to 1995 he was a NATO fellow at the Optoelectronic Computing Systems Center at the University of Colorado. His current research is in the field of optical wireless systems, including integrated transceiver components for high-speed networks, retro reflecting transceivers, optical channel characterization, and aspects of optoelectronic component integration.
