Large project governance (LPG)

Large infrastructure and other projects have an important role in the future of the society and its welfare. Such large projects are ultimate solutions that integrate users, project suppliers, and service providers with new configurations in the value stream. The focus of Large Project Governance (LPG) is on developing the management of large projects as networks of different business actors, by addressing the governance mechanisms of networks of multiple firms contained in a large project. For individual firms or organizations, LPG provides an understanding of how to match their management approaches to benefit simultaneously both the project enterprise and their own businesses. The research method in LPG is to analyze both public and private actors in large projects, by focusing on their multiple simultaneous and even conflicting business interests and behaviors. The LPG activities include analyses of ongoing and completed large projects, firm-specific development activities, national and international knowledge sharing seminars, joint academic writing and active researcher exchange at the professor and senior researcher level. LPG is a cross-disciplinary research including collaboration with partners both at the national level (Aalto University School of Science and Technology, Åbo Akademi University, University of Oulu) and at the international level (Stanford University, USA, New Jersey Institute of Technology, USA and University of Manchester, UK). LPG’s other international university partners are: University G. d'Annunzio, Italy; University of Brighton, CENTRIM, UK; Politecnico di Milano, Italy; Tongji University, China; Tsinghua University, China; Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway and Stevens Institute of Technology, USA.

The financing organizations include Fortum Power and Heat, Finnish Defence Forces, Neste Oil, and Nokia Siemens Networks. Furthermore, the Ministry of Employment and the Economy participates as a follower.
