Doctoral Programmes

DP-HBS gathers clinical medicine, biomedicine, biochemistry, molecular medicine, dentistry, health sciences, medical technology and biology under the umbrella of a multidisciplinary training programme. As one of the four multidisciplinary doctoral programmes of the University of Oulu Graduate School, DP-HBS is a fundamental part of the University of Oulu strategic research focus area “Molecular and environmental basis of life-long health” and it will strengthen the systematic and already strong research training and collaboration in this field. DP-HBS operates in close connection with Medical Research Center Oulu (MRC Oulu) and Biocenter Oulu (BCO), and the research environment of the doctoral students spans over several faculties, predominantly the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine. The number of doctoral students in DP-HBS is over 500. Within the HBS programme, it is also possible to apply for 3-6 months positions instead of the full four years.

DP-HS is linked to four doctoral degree programmes in four faculties: Educational Sciences (Faculty of Education), Humanities (Faculty of Humanities), Economics and Business Administration (Oulu University Business School), and Geography (Faculty of Natural Sciences). The doctoral program also maintains close connections to Eudaimonia Institute, which fosters cross-disciplinary research within university’s “Understanding humans in change” research focus area. HS-DP doctoral students are encouraged to interact with researchers across disciplinary and faculty boundaries during their studies.

DP-ITEE offers multidisciplinary doctoral training in the fields related to information systems and software engineering, computer science and engineering, communications engineering, and electrical engineering. As one of the four multidisciplinary doctoral programmes of the University of Oulu Graduate School, DP-ITEE is a fundamental part of the University of Oulu strategic research focus area “Digital solutions in sensing and interactions” and it will strengthen the systematic and already strong research training and collaboration in this field. A close collaborator for many research projects is Infotech research institute. The number of doctoral students in DP-ITEE is approximately 400.

DP-TNS covers ten Doctoral Degree Programmes in the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Technology: Architecture, Biology, Geography, Geosciences and Mining Engineering and Mineral Processing, Industrial Engineering and Management, Mathematical Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, Physics and Astronomy, and Process and Environmental Engineering. The DP operates closely with the Kvantum Institute, which promotes research in two of the University's strategic research focus areas “Creating sustainability through materials and systems” and “Earth and near-space system and environmental change”. Doctoral students in the DP are strongly encouraged to interact across disciplinary and faculty boundaries during their studies. The number of doctoral students in DP-TNS is over 500.
