CWC to coordinate Finnish-American co-operation in wireless communication
Tekes, the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation, the Academy of Finland and the USA's National Science Foundation (NSF) have agreed on the foundation of a virtual institute aimed at solving mobile data transmission problems and developing competence and innovations. Planning of the WIFIUS institute is being co-ordinated by Professor Matti Latva-Aho from the University of Oulu's Centre for Wireless Communications (CWC) unit.

On 23 September, Hannah Strauss publicly defended her doctoral thesis. In her work at Thule Institute she looked into the siting processes for nuclear and hydro power projects in Finland from a social scientific perspective.
Rectors welcomed International Degree Students
On 9th of September 2011 University of Oulu for the first time hosted an event, where University of Oulu rector Lauri Lajunen and University of Applied Sciences rector Jouko Paaso were welcoming new international degree students. In their welcoming speeches both of the rectors emphasized the importance of international students to the internationalization of their educational institutions.
Funding decisions for short-term international research visits
The University of Oulu allocated altogether 200 000 euros from its 2011 budget to international research visits. The funding was meant for both incoming foreign researchers and outgoing University of Oulu researchers. The first call closed February 24, 2011, and the second August 5, 2011.
