When I was researching universities in my home country of Canada and abroad, I knew what I was looking for in my future city. I knew that I wanted to live and study in a place where the research being done had meaning. I wanted a place where everyone has the opportunity to take an idea and pursue it. Learning about programmes like the Business Kitchen and the Fab Lab made me realise that Oulu certainly matches this description.
The real surprise is when you first arrive in Oulu. Everything you have learned from the internet is true, but there is so much more. There are opportunities from getting involved with local businesses with Demola project, volunteering with the ‘coolest’ startup event, Polar Bear Pitching, to starting your own business at Startup Weekend. On top of everything, the city is beautiful. You can get everywhere by bike while enjoying the many parks and natural areas around the university.
My advice to everyone is to do your research, but arrive in Oulu with an open mind and immerse yourself in everything that the city has to offer. I have been in Oulu for just over a month now and I am not looking back.
