I am Diponkor Mondal. I arrived in Oulu in September, 2017. I am doing M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering: Biomechanics and Imaging, coordinated by Research Unit of Medical Imaging, Physics, and Technology (MIPT).
The MIPT is a new unit that started operating at the beginning of 2015 at the Faculty of Medicine, an integral part of the Kontinkangas Life Sciences Campus situated next to the University Hospital.
Finland offers one of the best education systems in the world. I feel Oulu offers even more in its unique combination of education and cultural life. The university is highly focused on research and new technologies are introduced as they are developed, which makes the environment very suitable for aspiring researchers and scientists. Oulu keeps on surprising me with many different opportunities.
Professors and all other staff are so nice and helpful. During the past summer, I got a summer job at the Oulu University Hospital while also working on my Master’s thesis, the topic being related to my work at the hospital. My supervisor is helping me in each and every aspect as I am taking the first steps towards a research career.
I come from a country where I was used to crowds and a lot of traffic. The first two weeks I felt quite lonely and cold. Then I began adjusting and now, I feel my experience has been great. It has exposed me to many a lot of different people and different cultures. Before coming here I thought I would only learn about the Finnish culture, but due to the variety of nationalities in the international Master’s programmes, I have learned much more than I expected. Oulu keeps you warm!
For me, the University of Oulu opened a door of opportunities. So, to those who are planning to apply but are not sure yet, my one-year experience in Oulu says that here are plenty of opportunities available in every corner, you just need to keep your eyes open, stay focused and keep doing what your heart says. The University of Oulu will not disappoint you.
