The Academy of Finland Centres of Excellence (CoE) are internationally competitive flagships of Finnish science and research. Centres of Excellence strive for scientific breakthroughs, develop high-quality creative research environments and train talented researchers for the needs of academic research and industry.

In the Lifelong health focus area, the University of Oulu is coordinating the Centre of Excellence in Cell-Extracellular Matrix (ECM) Research, directed by Taina Pihlajaniemi.
