The 60th anniversary of the University attracted a record amount of guests to celebrate the Anniversary Gala organised by the university and the University of Oulu Association. There were 270 partners, alumni and friends of the unversity seated in round tables at Saalastinsali. In honour of the anniversary each table told a little story from the history of the university.
Researcher Yang Bai told in his research speech about the development of simultaneosly multifunctional materials. Professor Nina Hautala shared important facts about a widespread disease in Finland, diabetes, and it's connections to eye health. The gala guests were moved by Academy Research Fellow Kaisa Vehkalahti, who spoke about her history research on rural youth.
The night didn't pass without surprises. A statue found in the storage of University of Applied Sciences, and was handed over to the rector Jouko Niinimäki. The statue is scarved by the very first teacher students of the university, one of them being Finland's former president Martti Ahtisaari.
Our alumn, Director of board at Business Finland, Pertti Korhonen gave the dinner speech. In his speech Korhonen recalled his times as a student, and the enthusiasm and courage to develop new. Rector Niinimäki rewarded two researchers, Anneli Pouta and Matti Pietikäinen, who have made it to the Highly Cited -list.
There was a lovely and warm festive atmosphere throuhout the evening. At the end of the evening Johanna Försti and her band raised the spirit even more and got people to fill the dance floor. The evening was topped off with menu created by Uniresta.
