My name is Kula, and I am currently pursuing a Master of Science in Economics at the University of Oulu. I arrived in Oulu just this autumn, and I am thrilled to be here. So far, my favourite thing about Oulu is the coexistence of the bustling city and serene nature.
My faculty, Oulu Business School, is at the Linnanmaa campus. The campus is vast yet well connected which makes getting around very easy. It has several facilities including a library, numerous study areas, and cafes where you can catch up with friends over coffee or a glass of wine.
One of the things that have helped me adjust to life in Oulu is getting into a routine early on. I have found that routine helps me effectively balance all of life’s demands. This has been especially key here at the University of Oulu as there is a significant amount of work for students to complete independently. While academics are important, I also find it necessary to allocate time for fitness, wellness and socializing. My routine ensures that I have adequate time to pursue all that is meaningful for me while staying on top of my schoolwork.
I consider myself a bit of an adrenaline junkie. To illustrate, I once bungee jumped off a 111-metre bridge at the Victoria Falls in Zambia. In keeping with my love for thrill seeking, I am looking forward to ice swimming this winter and trying out various winter sports.
I plan to immerse myself in Finnish culture while I am here. I am learning some basic Finnish, visiting the sauna regularly and trying to interact with as many new people as I can.
I hope to use the knowledge and experience gained from my studies in Oulu to develop and implement sustainable economic policies for developing countries worldwide.
