Politician Liisa Jaakonsaari, who is leaving the European Parliament, has been appointed as a member of the Board of the University of Oulu until the end of 2023. The University Collegium decided on the appointment on 27 May 2019. As a Board member, Jaakonsaari will replace Pasi Sahlberg, who left board work last year.
Liisa Jaakonsaari has crafted a long political career as a Member of the European Parliament and Member of Parliament in Finland, representing the constituency of Oulu. During her career, she has acted as the Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Minister of Employment, Vice Chairperson of the Social Democratic Party of Finland and its parliamentary group as well as acted in many prominent positions of trust in Finland and elsewhere in the world. She is also the former editor-in-chief of the Oulu Student Magazine.
Jaakonsaari was born and raised in Oulu, and she lives in the city’s Raksila area.
“I am very happy to take up this challenging and interesting position. The level education is rising in Europe, including Finland, and it is important to defend science and research as well as the great northern Finnish institution – the university,” says Jaakonsaari.
