Jouko Niinimäki re-elected as Rector of the University of Oulu

The University of Oulu Board of Directors re-elected the current Rector Jouko Niinimäki, 52, for the term of 2020–2024 at a meeting held on 12 June 2019.

Doctor of Science in Technology, Professor of Fibre and Particle Engineering Niinimäki has served as Rector of the University of Oulu since 2015.

Six persons applied for the rector’s position and three were selected for interviews.

“In the comparison of the applicants, the Board put emphasis on proven performance and experience in running the university. Rector Niinimäki has done a good job in developing the University of Oulu over the past five-year term. It is good to continue on this path. In this connection, we want to also thank all applicants,” says Chair Risto Murto of the University of Oulu Board of Directors.

“I want to thank the Board of Directors for trust. The decision will motivate me to continue to do my best in this job,” says Rector Niinimäki.

”During my past term, the university has strengthened its position as a research university, and employee satisfaction and university reputation have improved. Our economy and financial situation are stable. During the new, beginning term I will put more emphasis on the quality and attraction of education. The main goal is to improve student experience,” Niinimäki states.

Niinimäki has worked as a professor at the University of Oulu since 2000 and has also served as Dean of the Faculty of Technology.
