Taina Pihlajaniemi continues as Vice Rector for Research

The Board of the University of Oulu has chosen Professor Taina Pihlajaniemi, Doctor of Medicine, to continue as Vice Rector for Research for a five-year term starting on 1 July 2020. Pihlajaniemi has served as Vice Rector for Research for two terms, since 2010.

According to the presentation by Rector Jouko Niinimäki, Pihlajaniemi has evidence of successful research activities and experience in successful management of large international research entities of high quality. Pihlajaniemi has a vision for developing research activities and supporting structures. In addition, the success of the University of Oulu's research has developed positively during her Vice Rector period.

Pihlajaniemi graduated as a doctorate and received the title of docent in 1987. She has worked as a Professor of medical biochemistry since 1990. Her scientific publishing, patent and guidance activities are extensive, and she has led her own collagen research group since 1985. Pihlajaniemi has held several positions of leadership and trust in science and has received several awards for her work, such as The Anders Jahre´s Nordic Medical Prize for Young Scientists 1994, The Science Prize of the State of Finland 1999, Matti Äyräpää Prize 2013 and the Northern Ostrobothnia Provincial Prize in Finland at the beginning of the year.

The University of Oulu also has an application for the Vice Rector responsible for education. There were more applications for this position, and the preparatory team will continue to prepare this selection.

Jouko Niinimäki will continue as Rector of the University of Oulu until the end of 2024 and Arto Maaninen as Vice Rector for Co-operation until the end of 2022.
