On the list comparing scientific disciplines at the world's best universities, the University of Oulu's ranking was 151-175 for engineering and technology and 176-200 for computer science. Based on a country-specific evaluation, research and teaching in both branches of science was among the best in Finland. Engineering and technology ranked second after Aalto University while computer science placed third – right behind Aalto and the University of Helsinki.
The rankings for the University of Oulu’s physical sciences, medicine and health sciences as well as education remained at the previous level. On the other hand, business and economics, humanities and architecture placed lower this year.

The Times Higher Education ranking for science subjects assesses teaching, research and the impact of research – which means references to research publications – in each branch of science. Reputation evaluations provided by members of the science communities are emphasised when ranking the areas of teaching and research. The ranking also assigns a small weight to external funding and internationality in the field of science.
Times Higher Education – World University Rankings published its list of the world’s best universities earlier this year. The University of Oulu ranked 251-300 on that list.
