The Times Higher Education University Impact rankings are based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) defined by the UN in 2016, such as the eradication of poverty, the promotion of equality and action against climate change and its impacts. In addition to the mandatory goal of “Partnerships for the goals”, the overall ranking of each university is based on the university's best three rankings in other goals.
Taking part in the rankings for the first time, the University of Oulu succeeded best in the goal of “Decent work and economic growth”. The goal examined the success of each university as a driver of sustainable economic growth and as a responsible employer. Oulu ranked 56th out of 760 universities. In this goal, the University of Oulu was the number one of Finnish universities.
The University of Oulu was also one of the top 100 universities in the goal of “Industry, innovation and infrastructure”. It was placed 83rd. This goal focused on the role and ability of universities to promote innovations and serve the needs of industry. Of Finnish universities, Oulu ranked second after Aalto University in this goal.
