Three applicants qualified for interviews in the university’s rector application process

On 22 May 2019, the University of Oulu Board of Directors processed the applications for the position of the Rector of the University of Oulu for the term 2020–2024.

Three candidates were selected for further interviews.

Jouko Niinimäki, Doctor of Science in Technology, is the University of Oulu’s current Rector and Professor of Fibre and Particle Engineering. He served as Dean of the Faculty of Technology in 2014 and as the head of a research group in 2000–2014. Niinimäki is the Chair of the Board of Directors of Finnish Education Employers and a member of the Board of Directors of the Confederation of Finnish Industries.

Helka-Liisa Hentilä, Doctor of Science in Technology, is the University of Oulu’s current Vice Rector for Education and Professor in Urban Design and Planning. She previously served as Dean of the Oulu School of Architecture in 2014–2015, Dean of Education of the Faculty of Technology in 2010–2013 and Director of the Department of Architecture in 2006–2013.

Seppo Parkkila, Doctor of Medicine, is a Professor of Anatomy at the University of Tampere. He served as the Vice Rector responsible for research at the University of Tampere in 2016–2018. He also previously served as Professor of Medical Technology and Biotechnology.

In its selections, the Board emphasised practical experience and proven performance in similar positions.
