On 9th of September 2011 University of Oulu for the first time hosted an event, where University of Oulu rector Lauri Lajunen and University of Applied Sciences rector Jouko Paaso were welcoming new international degree students. In their welcoming speeches both of the rectors emphasized the importance of international students to the internationalization of their educational institutions.
Joint event by the higher education institutions of Oulu area was a natural continuation of the years lasting cooperation in the field of international services. In addition, international students got an opportunity to meet each other and get familiar with both institutions.
Also the Orientation was renewed
The Orientation for new international students, previously organized twice a year, has been made even more extensive, for the first time targeting both exchange and international degree students. In previous years separate Orientation events were organized for the degree students. This year it was decided to unify and rationalize the events based on the common basic information which serves the both groups.
Events, which lasted whole week, have introduced students to the University and its services, as well as to the city of Oulu and Student Union. In addition, individual departments organized separate info sessions about their operations.
Bianca Beyer chose to study in the University of Oulu thanks to its good reputation and based on recommendations. She fell in love with Finland already during her exchange period.
Bianca Beyer came from Germany to study in Financial and Management Accounting degree programme. She considered that the events were necessary, even though she already got familiar with the basics of living in Finland during her Erasmus-exchange in Vaasa. For her the best part in the organized events was the opportunity to meet with other students.
About 120 new international degree students start their studies in the University of Oulu this year. At the same time, university has received about 250 new exchange students.
