The Faculty of Technology has received funding of about EUR 2 million from Tekes FiDiPro program for a research project. The five-year project is focused on study of the use of bio-materials, especially cellulose-based nanofibres in composite products. The project is co-funded by 27 Finnish companies, who are manufacturing biocomposite materials and products.
World-class scientist Professor Kristiina Oksman (pictured) form Luleå University of Technology will be hired for the project. Oksman is one of the world's best-known and most-cited researchers in the field of composites. She has made her long career in biocomposite research and development in Norway and Sweden. Oksman will work at the University of Oulu, Fibre Particle Engineering Research group from the beginning the project on January 2015.
University of Oulu and Faculty of Technology have supported biocomposite research by funding the procurement composites manufacturing and testing of equipment with approximately 800 000 euros during this year. In addition, the university will set up new modern laboratory facilities for composite research as part of the renovation projects at Linnanmaa campus area.
FiDiPro project will bring to the University of Oulu international level cooperation with major research institutes and companies in the field of biocomposites. This project will also open up new opportunities for formation of large-scale consortia required in EU projects.
