Prince Albert to Oulu in September

Prince Albert II of Monaco will be the keynote speaker at the UArctic Congress in Oulu in September 2018. He will arrive in Finland at the invitation of Rector Jouko Niinimäki. Niinimäki serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Governors of the UArctic cooperative network of universities.

Jouko Niinimäki issued the invitation in Monaco in the spring of 2016. A more detailed invitation was presented at the beginning of this year when the dates of the congress was decided. Known for his love of sport, Prince Albert will take part in activities including a church boat rowing event from Maikkula to the centre of Oulu down the Oulu River.

It has not yet been announced if Prince Albert will arrive in Finland alone or with his family.

Prince Albert is very interested in Arctic questions and is committed to them. His foundation has a framework agreement with UArctic linked with the cooperation as well as project cooperation with several different universities in the network. For example, in 2014 the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation donated a significant sum of money for an education project coordinated by the University of Oulu involving visualisation of environmental change. Other extensive educational projects have included support for the training of young reindeer herders in Mongolia. Projects supported by Prince Albert have focused especially on environmental protection and people of the north.

The UArctic Congress will be held in Oulu on 3-6 September, 2018. The closing day is on 7 September in Helsinki.

The University of the Arctic (UArctic) is a cooperative network of universities, research institutes, and other educational and research organisations. It focuses on the development of northern areas, and creates worldwide cooperative relationships.
