The University of Oulu Gala was held for a fourth time on Friday, 9 November 2018 More than 160 guests were present in the University Main Building, whose interior had been decorated for the event. The gala was first organised in the autumn of 2015 as a benefit for a fundraising campaign at the time. Now the event has evolved into an annual University Gala held on the second Friday of November.
The purpose of the gala is to serve as a celebration with entertainment among friends of the university and its key stakeholders, with an appropriate presence of science. In addition, a keynote speaker sets out the theme of the evening according to their background and career.
At this year's gala Professor Mirja Illikainen, Docent Vesa Kiviniemi, and Professor Rainer Mahlamäki presented their research. The guests at the gala were moved by our main guest, Professor Paula Vanninen, director of VERIFIN, the Finnish Institute for Verification of the Chemical Weapons Convention. Professor Vanninen has devoted her life to chemical weapons analytics and to education work and international positions of trust in the field.
The musical performances of the evening were by Ida Elina, who plays pop music on the Finnish kantele, and the Johannes Salomaa Ilmiö show band, featuring Pamela Kilpeläinen. The flavours of the evening were from the chefs at Uniresta.
We welcome all to the next gala evening at the same time next year. Adding a flavour of its own to the event at that time will be the beginning of the 60th anniversary year of the launch of the activities of the University of Oulu.
