Biography

Heidi Hartikainen is a postdoctoral researcher in the INTERACT research unit at the faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering. She is interested in the themes of safety and privacy in the social web, and on empowerment and activism through technology design and making.

In her PhD research, Heidi studied how children approach online safety and how it is mediated in schools and families. In 2020 Heidi completed a 14-month research visit to University of Central Florida, where participated in several projects concerning adolescent online safety and did research for example concerning adolescent online sexual risk, and the online peer support they receive concerning it.

Heidi has also acquired extensive experience in design and making projects with children and adults at Oulu University, working as a researcher in projects such as DeMaKids, Make-A-Difference, Make4Change, and COMnPLAYScience. She is a graduate of Fab Academy (2018), an intensive five-month program that teaches students to envision, design and prototype projects using digital fabrication tools and machines.
