Sonja Pietiläinen

I am a doctoral researcher at the Geography Research Unit. My dissertation in political geography examines the connection between the anti-immigration radical right and the ecological and climate crisis. My research is based on empirical material collected in the Finnish and Russian contexts: interviews, ethnographic observations, and visual and textual analysis.

I have also co-authored White Skin, Black Fuel: On the dangers of fossil fascism (Verso, 2021) and contributed to an edited volume of visual politics of the far-right where I examine the intersection of whiteness, nationalism and hypermasculinity in far-right politics in Russia (Visualising far-right environments: Communication and the politics of nature, Manchester University Press, 2023).
