I am Udgum Khadka. I am doing a M.Sc. in Economic & Business Administration in Marketing at Oulu Business School. I arrived in Oulu on August, 2015. I am from Kathmandu, the capital city of my birthplace - Nepal.
My study is going as planned so far. Most likely by the end of 2016, I will finish most of my courses and begin working on my thesis. The study environment, methodologies and infrastructure at the University of Oulu are advanced, digital and innovative. Also, the university is highly focused on research and discovery of new knowledge, which makes it very suitable for aspiring researchers and scientists. Myself, I am not a big fan of research and academia, yet even then my choices are not limited.
Besides study, for active individuals, University of Oulu and Oulu city itself have so much to offer. Opportunities come across from different areas. Especially, for budding entrepreneurs and curious persons, Oulu is currently the best place to exploit. University spin-offs and entrepreneurial hubs are prominently conducting various activities and events.
After settling down for a few months, I got involved in many activities and kept developing myself. I am a part of student organization called AIESEC (Association internationale des étudiants en sciences économiques et commerciales). I took part in the University mentorship program and later got a University grant to do an internship in Brazil. I am also a tutor student for new degree students and recently, I am participating in the University of Oulu Alumni Ambassador program. Last but not the least, I participated in the Start-up weekend Oulu and established a company with some amazing people from different countries. Taking my experience to the next level, I just started working at the Tellus Innovation Arena - a collaborative and multi-disciplinary hub of the University established to foster entrepreneurship and innovation among students, researchers, staff, companies and other relevant stakeholders.
From the very beginning, many people of my community used to tell me it’s almost impossible to get a good job and build an astounding career in Oulu. I guess they got their answer. So, to those who are thinking of applying but aren’t sure yet, my year and a half’s experience in Oulu says plenty of opportunities are available every now and then, you just need to keep your eyes open for opportunities, stay positive and keep doing what you are passionate about and eventually, things will fall into places.
