Significant rise for the University of Oulu in the latest Shanghai ranking

The University of Oulu has climbed up in the Shanghai university ranking. In the ranking of the world's best universities, the University of Oulu ranked in the bracket 301-400. Last year, the university was dropped out of the top 500.

Among Finnish universities, the University of Oulu is at a shared second place with Aalto University and the University of Turku. The best Finnish university was again the University of Helsinki, which placed 63rd in the Shanghai ranking. This year, a total of eight Finnish universities were included in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), compiled by Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

“The University of Oulu’s improved position can be explained by the fact that now after a few years, two of our researchers have made it on the Highly Cited Scientists list again. The weight of this merit is as much as 20% in the Shanghai ranking,” Pertti Tikkanen, Head of Planning, says.

The Shanghai ranking is one of the best-known and respected international university rankings. The indicators used in the ranking include the number of scientific publications, the number of highly cited researchers and the number of publications in the Nature and Science series.
