The International Master’s Programme in Economics (ME) is a two-year programme providing rigorous training in modern Economics. The programme offers you a comprehensive understanding of the theoretical and methodological knowledge in Economics. You can take a multidisciplinary approach to your study contents with elective field-specific courses in order to build a broad base of knowledge. In particular, ME programme gives you expertise and core competence on the following topics:
- advanced micro- and macroeconomics
- quantitative methods in economics
- international macroeconomics and finance
- managerial economics
- globally responsible business
Studying in ME programme includes group work and projects, through which you will learn to apply your economic expertise, and acquire the problem solving, project management and presentation skills you will need in your career as economist. The discipline of economics runs a wide portfolio of research projects, which gives you insights in current issues in interesting topics such as: energy and environmental economics, regional economics, international macroeconomics and finance, and health and social economics.
Economics has been taught in the University of Oulu since its establishment and the discipline is a part the AASCB accredited Oulu Business School (OBS). ME programme is one of the several international Master’s Programmes provided at OBS, and you can take elective courses from other programmes. OBS organizes frequent seminars with Finnish and international visitors from business and academia, and students are strongly encouraged to attend these events. You can also join an exchange programme with another university.
ME programme equips graduates with the skills they need as a professional economist working in business, government, international organizations, and research centres. Depending on their interests, they can for example work with market research in the financial sector, with strategic pricing and production decisions in private firms, and with fiscal and monetary policy within the public sector. ME programme also serves as thorough preparation for Ph.D. studies.

Students applying for the programme must possess an applicable B.Sc. degree in business studies, social sciences, natural sciences, mathematics, or engineering.
