Biocenter Oulu Functions

Biocenter Oulu is a multidisciplinary umbrella organisation within the Biosciences and Health research focus area of the University of Oulu. Currently it consists of 10 research projects and 3 junior investigator projects selected for fixed terms by international evaluation, and 6 coordinators’ projects.
 
The total staff of Biocenter Oulu is ca. 270, including about 110 project leaders, senior and post-doctoral researchers, 110 Ph.D. and M.D. -Ph.D. students in the Biocenter Oulu Doctoral Programme, and 50 laboratory technicians and other personnel.
 
Biocenter Oulu operates 9 research infrastructure core facilities and belongs to the national Biocenter Finland network. Half of the Biocenter Oulu groups are working at the Linnanmaa Campus in the Faculty of Science half at the Medical Campus in the Faculty of Medicine and in the University Hospital. Biocenter Oulu administration and majority of the core facilities have been concentrated in the Main Building of the Medical Campus, opened in 2003. Thus, the groups at the Biocenter Oulu are scattered, but the mutual interaction is stimulated with a common doctoral programme, core facility services, joint seminars, symposia and meetings of group leaders.
