The Biocenter core facilities of protein analysis and protein crystallization form together the research and development infrastructure for structural biocatalysis - Strucbiocat. Functional and structural information is relevant in developing new and optimized biocatalysts. The Strucbiocat infrastructure offers both the equipment and the expertise for the benefit of local researchers and biotechnology companies as well as other Finnish and international operators. Technology services are available in the areas of molecular enzymology, mass spectrometry, protein biophysical characterization, X-ray crystallography and biocomputing.

The concept of Strucbiocat
During a two-year project, this center of expertise is being significantly improved. The main goals of the Strucbiocat project are
1) To strengthen the biocatalysis R&D infrastructure by new equipment purchases
2) To improve the technology services offered to researchers and biotechnology companies
The Strucbiocat infrastructure is open for university researchers and other research institutes in relevant fields as well as for biotechnology companies in Finland or elsewhere in the world. Both technology services and access to instruments are available. Please find more information about the instruments available under headings "Protein characterization" and "Protein crystallization".
The duration of the Strucbiocat project is 1.3.2012-28.2.2014 and it has a total budget of 719 000 euros, 75 % of which comes from the European Regional Development Fund via the Council of Oulu Region. After the project, the equipment purchased will stay at the University of Oulu as part of the Biocenter Oulu core facilities.
