Mika Niemelä

I work as a Professor of Practice at the University of Oulu. My work is part of the development and research based on the Collective Impact framework of the Itla Children’s Foundation (Itla). Itla and the University of Oulu carry out this work by supporting well-being areas in building preventive, integrative services that promote the well-being of families with children.

I also serve as the Interaction Coordinator in the SchoolWell research consortium funded by the Strategic Research Council (SRC) (Future School of Comprehensive Well-Being, University of Helsinki). SchoolWell develops research-based solutions to promote the well-being of children and youth as part of their schoolwork.

In addition to my research work, I have been involved in developing and implementing child- and family-centered methods and training programs for over 20 years. I have provided training and consultation to organizations and professionals from various fields in family- and network-centered work. I have also worked as a training psychotherapist in couple and family therapy psychotherapy training programs.

Research interests

  • Adverse childhood experiences and children's mental health
  • Child- and family-centered methods and services
