What is a Science Hack Day?
A Science Hack Day is a two-day event where anyone interested about making anything (either serious, weird or even funny) with science and technology comes together in the same physical space to see what they can prototype within 24 consecutive hours. Anyone passionate about making things with science and technology is welcome to attend. No previous experience is required.
During the weekend, participants organically form multidisciplinary teams to solve certain problem. Any participant can suggest a topic, but an international jury will select the most exciting ones. By collaborating on focused tasks during this short period, small groups of “hackers” are capable of producing a quick solution to the given problem. This solution is not usually the most elegant one, but it is often the cleverest.
There are Science Hack Day all around the world. You can find more information at: http://sciencehackday.org/about/
What is Oulu Science Hack Day?
Oulu Science Hack Day, organized by Fab Lab Oulu, are looking for solutions to present challenges emphasizing the use digital fabrication processes (although they are not a must). The digital fabrication movement lead by makers, Fab Labs and hackerspaces is becoming the new digital revolution that is revolutizining the digital economy, opening totally new business opportunities. In Oulu Science Hack day participants will be able to utilize Fab Lab machines (laser cutter, vinyl cutter, cnc milling machine, 3D printer, electronic benches …) to fabricate their prototypes. In addition they will count with the support of Fab Lab Oulu staff and a group of international experts on digital fabrication.
Some ideas that has already been proposed by some our partners include fabrication of futuristics artifacts for a Sci-Fi movie, utilizing digital fabrication processes to create handicraft (fab crafts) or envisioning a infrastucture to create a Fab City in Oulu.
In addition, you can get acquainted with the activities carried out by different Fab Labs established in the nordic countries.
How will it work?
During Saturday morning anyone can come and pitch for their own project idea. A jury formed by international experts will choose the most exciting ones. The participants can join to any of the chosen project ideas and start working. The groups will report periodically to a group of experts who will provide useful pieces of advice. Finally, on Sunday evening the groups will present their work and the international jury will select the best ones. In addition, during the weekend, Fab Lab managers from the main Fab Labs in the nordic countries will present their Fab Labs to all the participants.
Note that it is not needed to present any physical prototype at the end of the event. Just a design with pen and paper would suffice.
How can I participate?
The event is open to everybody no matter the previous background, experience or skills. The only requirement is to build somehting with your own hands in collaboration with others. If you have any idea you can present to the jury and it might be selected. If you still do not have anything in mind, just come and participate in any of the selected projects. If you do not have the time, you might want to come during the final presentation and learn what others have ideated and created.
