Impact and visibility of research

Topics illustrated by the means of bibliometric analysis include:

• the number of publications per year
• the quality of publication channels, i.e. their Finnish Publication Forum classification
• the visibility of publications, i.e. the number of publications in citation databases (Scopus and Web of Science)
• the impact of publications, i.e. the number of citations they have received
• researcher's cooperation network, i.e. the number of co-authors and affiliated organizations in publications.

The Library's Bibliometric Services conduct bibliometric analyses free of charge to support decision-making at faculties, departments and research groups. Bibliometric services provide publication analyses of applicants to support university’s tenure and professor recruitment.

You can order publication analyses from bibliometriikka@oulu.fi. It takes 1-3 weeks for the analysis to be completed.

Guidance and training

The library's bibliometric services also provides guidance and training. The training is free of charge to all units, staff and students of the University of Oulu.

Publication metrics refers to the quantitative analysis of scientific publications focusing on the number of publications and citations they have received. Publication metrics are utilized in the evaluation of research. The University of Oulu is committed to the responsible use of publication metrics.

It is important for researchers that their articles are easy to find in citation databases and thus gain visibility in the research community. However, due to variations in spelling and spelling mistakes in authors’ names in the databases, the identification of researchers and finding their publications can be difficult. Researcher profiles under which researchers can gather their publications improve the researchers’ visibility in the research community. University of Oulu supports the use of ORCID in Finland. The National Connect Service links your ORCID ID to the information systems of the University of Oulu after which your ORCID is saved also in your OuluCRIS researcher profile. When included in your profile ORCID is transferred with publication information into the national systems and could be utilized e.g. by the Academy of Finland.

Choosing the publication channel is a vital part of the publication process. The quality, scope and openness of the journal are important issues to be considered.

Open access publishing is included in both the University of Oulu’s strategy of responsible research and the national Declaration for Open Science and Research[TM1] . Funding bodies also require open access publishing in the projects they fund.
