International Master's Degree programmes

The deadline for next applications is January 31st 2012 (4:15 pm).

The high quality of Finland's education system has been recognized in international assessments like PISA. According to academic rankings of world universities, University of Oulu belongs to the top 400. The Department of Physics is an official "Centre of Excellence in Research" within the university after gaining, in 2007, a numerical rating 6 out of 7 from an international evaluation panel.

Department's two years long (120 ECTS credits) full-time Master's Degree programmes (listed on the left) aimed for foreign students are open for applications from students with a Bachelor's degree (180 ECTS) in related fields. The selection process comprises two stages:

Stage I: Written applications

  • The electronic online application with instructions will be available in Degree Applicants page of the University of Oulu. Note that after filling the application, it needs to be printed, signed and sent to the University Admission address in Helsinki. In additions, your application must contain a reference form filled by, e.g., your thesis supervisor.
  • If you can prove your language skills in English with, e.g., a TOEFL or other recognized tests, or a certificate issued by your university's English Language lecturer, you can attach that to your application. However, an interview (see below) will be used to verify the skills in practise.

Stage II: Interview

  • The best applicants will be interviewed before accepting them to the programme. If unable to attend the interview in person, applicants residing outside Finland will be interviewed, e.g., via Skype or telephone. The purpose of the individual interview in English is to establish the applicant's ability to discuss the content areas of the programme, their motivation, social skills and language skills in English. The time reserved for interviewing each applicant is about half an hour.

Note that the Finnish Immigration Authorities have income requirements for foreign students. Students who are not citizens of an EU/EEA member states are liable to pay the tuition fee. University of Oulu provides scholarships to talented students. The scholarships can be applied by completing “Application for Scholarship” part at the end of the Online Application Form.
