Mathematical geophysics

Research is lead by prof. Pertti Kaikkonen.

Mathematical geophysics covers methods for modelling and inversion, but also more general theoretical topics. One of the main tasks of geophysics is to reveal the structure of the earth quantitatively. In this task the field measurements are always the starting point. In addition, theoretical responses obtained by numerical modelling of realistic earth models are needed. Finally, by comparing the field data and the model responses, quantitative statement of the structure of the earth can be made by solving the geophysical inverse problem. Numerical modelling and inversion are an important area of geophysical research.
