Research in the Department focuses on two main areas: Software Engineering and Information Systems.
M-Group (http://www.oulu.fi/mgroup)
The focus of M-Group is empirical software engineering. We carry out research typically in collaboration with industry. A wide domestic and international industrial contact network provides a solid basis for empirical research that has high quality academic impact and also strong relevance for practitioners. The main topics of empirical research for software and data intensive systems and services include: Processes and quality, Agile & Lean methods, Software development methodologies, Requirements engineering, Software and system architectures, Testing, Cloud based development and systems (in and for cloud), Innovation processes, Service design methods and tools. contact: professor Markku Oivo
MOBI (http://www.oulu.fi/mobi)
The specific aim of MOBI Research group is to develop smart homes and living environments and advanced mobile location- and context-based services such as augmented reality services. This is achieved with the help of innovative embedded, ubiquitous mobile and internet applications and services. contact: professor Petri Pulli
INTERACT (http://www.oulu.fi/interact/)
The INTERACT research group has strong background in multidisciplinary research, combining perspectives from both humanistic and information technology oriented disciplines. The group relies mainly on qualitative, participatory, and constructive research approaches; in many cases developing novel pilot IT applications and experimenting with them in the field has an important role in research. contact: professor Netta iivari
OASIS (http://www.oasis.oulu.fi/)
The OASIS research group studies how software and information systems can best serve people and organizations to perform knowledge work and other activities. In many cases the research is carried out by constructing new concepts and technology, and experimenting with it. A special emphasis is put in parallel on investigating both the usefulness and the ease of use of these systems. contact: professor Harri Oinas-Kukkonen
ISSRC
Information Systems Security Research focuses the following research areas: Integration of information security to the information systems and software development methods, behavioural aspects of information security at the organizational and home contexts, effect of information security training and awareness for employees’ information security behaviour, implication of the different managerial tactics to reduce cyber loafing at work place, influence of Information Technology (IT) incidents on users’ use of IT services, and Models for Explaining Social Engineering.
Projects: ISSRC, RIESCA, RoleID, SECMES, PREDYKOT, MERgE

Research partners
Companies have a strong role in our research cooperation. Most of the funding for the research projects comes from public sources such as the European Union, Tekes (Technical Research Centre of Finland) and the Academy of Finland. In addition, international and small IT companies are involved in research projects which makes it possible to share research knowledge for use in industry. Both VTT and companies in the near by technology park, the first in the Nordic countries have strong cooperation with the University of Oulu and our Department. We have good contacts with several European, North American, Australian and Japanese universities and research institutes through various international projects.
