Ville-Valtteri Visuri
Title of Docent, D.Sc. (Tech.)
Associate Professor
Sustainable Primary Metallurgy of Steelmaking
Ville-Valtteri Visuri is an Associate Professor and the leader of the Research Group for Primary Metallurgy of Steelmaking in the Process Metallurgy Research Unit at the University of Oulu. He also serves as Director of the Doctoral Degree Programme in Technology, Chemistry, and Geosciences at the University of Oulu Graduate School and as Chair of the Executive Board of the Centre for Advanced Steels Research (CASR).
Visuri's research focuses on chemical kinetics and transport phenomena in the metallurgy of steelmaking. His main research interests are related to the following unit processes:
- hot metal desulfurisation (HMD),
- electric arc furnace (EAF),
- electric smelting furnaces (SAF, OSBF),
- hydrogen plasma smelting reduction (HPSR),
- basic oxygen furnace (BOF), and
- argon-oxygen decarburisation (AOD).
The research methods cover both computational methods, such as dynamic mathematical modelling and computational thermodynamics, and experimental methods, including crucible experiments and thermogravimetry. The research is tightly connected with the process development of the steel industry and thereby contributes to the larger societal aim of reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Before joining the tenure track, Visuri worked as R&D Manager for Modelling at Outokumpu Stainless Oy, bringing industrial experience to his research and teaching.
