682508P Survey of North America (Compulsory course)
Scope: 3 pts
Timing: 1st year or 2nd year, autumn semester.
Objective: Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to explain how and why North Americans and Finns see their countries and the world differently.
Content: Selected topics concerning the United States and Canadian society, which are examined in a historical perspective.
Working methods: Lectures.
Target group: Introductory-level students of English Philology and students in the Programme: ‘Area Studies and the Anglophone World’.
Prerequisites: None.
Study materials: Mauk, D. & J. Oakland. American Civilization: An Introduction, 3rd or 4th ed. London: Routledge; Henriksson, M. Kanada – vaahteranlehden maa. Helsinki: Gaudeamus, and internet readings. The availability of coursebooks can be checked in WebOodi.
Assessment methods: Examination.
Grading: 0–5
