682500P Introduction to British Studies (Compulsory course)
Scope: 3 pts
Timing: 1st year, autumn semester.
Objective: The student is expected to understand and demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the complex routes towards identity en-countered in the British and Irish islands (the Isles), and to be able to discuss their historical, political and social contexts.
Content: This is English Philology’s foundation course in British Cultural Studies. It is rooted in the histories of the islands of Britain and Ireland, and addresses the complex, overlapping and discrete identities that make up the nations of these islands. Particular reference is made to the growth and expansion of England and the influence England has had on the Isles, Europe and the wider world. The course assesses the key watersheds in British development and details the discourse of the British nation today. Welsh, Scottish, English, Irish, Northern Irish and British identities are examined.
Working methods: Lectures.
Target group: Introductory-level students of English Philology and students in the Programme: ‘Area Studies and the Anglophone World’.
Prerequisites: None.
Study materials: Lecture power points; academic articles; a range of poetry relating to national identity; selected paintings concerning national identity; key required reading.
Assessment methods: Examination.
Grading: 0–5
