Postgraduate studies

In the Faculty of Humanities doctoral studies can be pursued in the following disciplines: Archaeology, Cultural anthropology, English philology, History (Finnish and Scandinavian history, General History), Finnish language, General history, German philology,  History of Science and Ideas, Information studies, Literature, Logopedics, Nordic philology, Saami culture, Saami language.

The postgraduate degrees available at the Faculty of Arts are the Doctor of Philosophy and the Licentiate of Philosophy degrees. The right to pursue graduate studies is always granted for the pursuit of doctoral studies. However, if the student so wishes he or she can complete a licentiate degree before a doctorate.  Therefore, the objective of research and study plans submitted with the application should be designated as the DPhil degree.

The requirements for a postgraduate degree are:

  • an approved doctoral dissertation (for the DPhil degree) or an approved Licentiate thesis (for the Lic.Phil. degree)
  • studies worth 60 credits

As the main objective of the doctoral student is a DPhil degree, the applicant should make sure that qualified supervision for his/her particular research interests is available at the Faculty of Humanities. The applicant must contact the relevant main subject and discuss the research proposal, the study plan and arrangements for supervision.
