Faculty of Humanities
P.O. Box 1000
90014 University of Oulu
The applicant for postgraduate status should possess either:
a) a relevant degree roughly comparable to the Finnish Master's degrees or
b) otherwise proven knowledge and skills sufficient for DPhil studies.
A degree is regarded as relevant if it includes sufficient studies in a subject which, given the topic of the proposed doctoral dissertation, can be regarded as a suitable basis for doctoral studies.
The applicant should also have the language skills that he/she will require in his/her postgraduate studies.
If the applicant’s basic degree has been completed at another university or in a subject other than what he or she is applying for, the Faculty may at its discretion require the student to complete complementary studies worth a maximum of 60 credits. The leading professor of the discipline will confirm the complementary studies to be required.
These complementary studies cannot be included in the studies required for the Licentiate or doctoral degrees, and must be completed before the Licentiate thesis or the doctoral dissertation is submitted for examination. Furthermore, the student cannot have registered as completed entire modules required for the degree before the complementary studies have been completed.
A person who wishes to pursue doctoral studies in the Faculty of Humanities has to apply for admission.
Application forms and further instructions are available on the University of Oulu Graduate School (UNIOGS). An officially certified copy of the degree certificate should be attached to the application. The copy can be certified by the body that awarded the degree or by a notary public. An important part of the application is the research proposal which should be typed on the application form.
