About the Conference

NAES-FINSSE 2010: English in the North is a joint conference between two organizations:

The conference will be held 9-13 June, 2010 in Oulu, Finland, hosted by the University of Oulu. The conference is organized by the Department of English. The organizing committee is comprised of Professor Anthony Johnson (Chair), Docent Lisa Lena Opas-Hänninen and Riikka Mikkola (Conference Secretary).

Responsibility for the academic programme lies with the Boards of the NAES and FINSSE. See here for more information.

About the University

The University of Oulu (Oulun yliopisto in Finnish) was founded in 1958. It has six faculties with a total of approximately 17,000 students and 3,000 staff, making it the second largest university in Finland.

Information technology, Biotechnology, Northern and Environmental issues are special research focus areas at the University of Oulu, which also cooperates closely with industry and commerce and has connections with hundreds of international research and educational institutions. About Oulu

The city of Oulu is located in Northern Finland, by the Gulf of Bothnia, approximately 550 kilometres north of Helsinki. Oulu has a population of approximately 130,000, making it the sixth largest city in Finland.

The city was founded in 1605 by King Carl IX of Sweden and has been a provincial capital since 1776. Up to the end of the 19th century, Oulu was a significant centre of the wood tar trade, and in the 1860s Oulu had the largest fleet of merchant ships of any Finnish city.

Nowadays, Oulu is known for high technology, especially in the field of mobile communications. Furthermore, the city has a thriving cultural life. For example, several music festivals, genres ranging from classical music to heavy metal, are organised in Oulu every year. One of the annual festivals, The Irish Festival of Oulu has close ties with the staff of English Philology, University of Oulu.
