Our department is a multidisciplinary scholarly community in northern Finland. Since its establishment in 1966, the department of history has been a centre of education and research in history and its related fields. In 2001-2003 the department was a national centre of excellence in education. What makes the Department of History at University of Oulu stand out is the rich selection of multidisciplinary minor subjects in addition to two major subjects.

The Department of History at the University of Oulu is the northernmost of the altogether eleven history departments in Finland. The academic staff of some twenty people carry out most of the teaching and supervision of theses. Some 50 MA degrees and three doctoral degrees form the annual academic educational result.

The department is a member of CLIOHWORLD (Creating a New Historical Perspective: Europe and the Wider World), a Socrates-Erasmus thematic network (2009-2011). See also: International contacts.
