Classical archaeology focuses on Antiquity, particularly on the Greek and Roman world. The sources for classical archaeology comprise artifacts and structures, e.g. pottery, coins and building remains. Literary sources, however, provide another valuable insight to Greek and Roman cultures. Antiquity was an interesting and important period in the history of Europe and other Mediterranean countries. Familiarity with Antiquity is necessary for the understanding of western civilization during the past two millennia. Although Finland did not have many contacts with the Classical world, the European union of the time, Antiquity has influenced Finland’s history in many ways, e.g. through science, arts and democracy.
In addition to Culture and History of Antiquity, a student of classical archaeology at the Oulu University will profit from other related subjects, such as General History, General Archaeology, Art History, and Anthropology. A student wishing to establish an academic career in Classical Archaeology needs also knowledge of modern languages (e.g. Greek, Italian, French and German). Classical archaeology itself is all-around education and, for this reason, it is highly recommended for students seeking a career in various spheres of cultural life. The subject is also useful for history students, who are planning to write their Masters thesis on any subject related to Classical cultures. Basic studies of Classical archaeology are intended to give an overview on archaeology and Classics as well as on the basic characteristics of Classical archaeology and Art. Intermediate studies are designed to provide the student with abilities to do archaeological research. In addition to practical work, this objective is reached through elective studies. At this stage, the students have also an opportunity to participate in excursions or archaeological excavations in the Mediterranean.
