Finnish linguistics studies the use, structure, development, and variation of the Finnish language. Particular focus areas at the University of Oulu are sociolinguistics, especially northern Baltic-Finnic minority languages, semantics, contrastive studies, and Finnish as a second and foreign language. Our emphasis is on the northern part of the speech area.
Finnish language is one of the major subjects offered in the Faculty of Humanities. We approach the language from a number of different linguistic angles. The department does not offer elementary instruction in the Finnish language, and all courses are taught in Finnish. Practical language courses are offered at the Language Center. Foreign students with a Bachelor's degree and excellent command of Finnish may apply to a Masters program in Finnish. Please contact the department for more information.
