The Project "Town, border and material culture" studies the transition from the medieval and early modern period to the present day and, in particular, the dynamics of modernisation and globalisation processes in the northern Gulf of Bothnia. The general aim of the project is to study how everyday life changed in relation to the local development of cultural landscapes and an emerging new worldview, analyzing environment, urban space, artefacts, archaeological assemblages and historical documents. The project integrates archaeological data from urban and non-urban contexts in northern Finland, excavated 1973-2008, and the historical documents including town maps and illustrations, probate inventories and fire insurance records.
This three year project was launched at the University of Oulu at January 2009. The project is funded by the Emil Aaltonen Foundation (2009-2011) and the Academy of Finland (2010-2012). The results will be published in international journals and ultimately as a research monograph. Three PhDs will be completed within the project and several MA theses will be supervised by the project researches.
