FOR STUDENTS |

Limited study time and grounds for extending the right to studyStudents who have been admitted to the university within the new system of degrees after the Autumn of 2005 need to take into consideration the regulations regarding the limited study time (Law on Changing the Universities Act). The regulation states e.g. the targeted study times for Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees and the grounds for absences not considered part of the study time per degree. Students that have changed from the old system of degrees to the new system are not within the scope of the study time limitations. The limitations only apply to students who have been admitted to a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programme within the new system of degrees after Aug 1st 2005. Targeted study times The combined target time for graduating with both the Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees (and Licentiate of Dentistry) is five academic years. Target time for Licentiate of Medicine is six years. For a Master’s degree only the target time is two years. Duration of the right to study Students admitted to study for both the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree combined have the right to extend their study time with two academic years on top of the original target time. Students admitted to study for a Master’s degree only have the right to an extension of two years on top of the target time. Right to study is admitted: Starting time Student is considered to have started studying from the time of accepting the study place. Postponing the start of studies doesn’t affect the considered starting time. Grounds for extending the study time 1. Absence on statutory grounds: Often the absence takes place during several academic years. The study time is extended by one term for each absence of 5 months. The extension is decided regardless of the student having registered absent or present. 2. Registering absent The study time can be extended for a maximum of two academic years on the grounds of the student registering absent. The reasons for registering absent are not considered. Performing an interruption of studies is regarded equal to registering absent. 3. Applied extension If a student hasn’t graduated within the allocated study time and within the extensions conferred according to the above mentioned criteria, they can apply for an extension based on a graduation plan. Graduation plan refers to the personal study plan (“HOPS”) mentioned in the law on limited study time. The plan is a prerequisite for the admission of an extension. The extensions by application are considered individually. If a student neglects to register, the study time will be considered to have been used as usual. Advice for students with limited study time You should actively and personally follow your study time in e.g. WebOodi, especially in the final stages of your studies. In WebOodi, you can find the ending date of your right to study for a specific degree. If you notice that you aren’t able to graduate within that time, you have to act yourself. You should take care of extending your right to study a couple of months before the ending date in order to be able to register for the following terms. Your study right is automatically extended accordingly by Oodi in case you have registered absent or interrupted your studies, for a maximum of two years. If your study right is ending and you have been absent on statutory grounds, you should submit a notice of extending the study time and proof of the reasons to the Student Services of the University of Oulu. The periods of absence are registered in Oodi and the system will extend your study right accordingly. (printable extension form) If you do not have statutory grounds or the extension given on statutory grounds is ending and you will not be able to graduate within the allocated time, you should prepare a graduation plan and submit it to be approved by your department. Detailed information on the details of submitting a graduation plan is provided by each Faculty. You should then deliver the extension application and the approved graduation plan to the Faculty Office, where the extension of study time is registered to Oodi. Study time can be extended for a maximum of two years on the grounds of a single graduation plan.
