Rules and regulations concerning degrees, teaching and students
The rules and regulations form the guideline for matters related to teaching and studying. The original rulers and regulations document is in Finnish, but here are translated into English the most important points related to teaching.
Curricula and study attainments
5 § Teachers must follow the accepted curricula and the regulations and instructions given on their tasks and the teaching given at university.
15 § Purpose of evaluating a study attainment is to follow the progress of a student and to collect information on the learning process and its results. The evaluation is based on the learning outcomes and the criteria expressed in the curricula. It is the responsibility of the teacher who gives the evaluation to inform the students in advance of the alternative ways to complete a study unit and of the evaluation standards.
19 § Student’s right to use other than the language of teaching in the study attainments is decided by the department director.
Examinations
21 § Examination results have to be announced within 3 weeks from the time the teacher has received them. It is possible to prolong the period with the permission of the department director, but the students have to be informed.
22 § Every student has the right to get a explanation of their performance and evaluation and the general evaluation criteria. Students are also allowed to take a look at their evaluated exam paper and take photocopies at their own expense.
23 § Students have the right to retake exams. Examinations related to courses and other teaching are supposed to have 2 retake sessions within a reasonable time.
24 § Written study attainments must be stored for 6 months after the results have been given. They cannot be made public without the consent of the student. However theses can be made public according to the university’s archive regulations (arkistosääntö).
25 § Students have the right to demand a rectification if they are unsatisfied with the evaluation of their exam from the teacher in question within 14 days of the announcement of the results.
26 § Examination or other process of completing a study attainment can be interrupted in case the student commits a misdemeanour. If the misdemeanour is found afterwards, the attainment can be failed.
If you face the problem of e.g. exam results being late or you are unaware of evaluation criteria, it is best to contact the teacher in question as soon as possible. With larger issues, you can turn to the department director or your coordinator. In problematic cases also the Student Union can help by mediating the issue.
