Teacher’s Urkund

The Urkund system was introduced at the University of Oulu in fall 2009. The teachers of the University of Oulu decide in which courses the Urkund system is going to be used. In addition, they shall guide the written work of students and provide the instructions necessary for its completion.  On the same occasion, the teachers shall also instruct the students in referencing techniques and familiarize them with the principles of high-quality scientific practice, which every member of the academic community must know. It is recommendable that a discussion on plagiarism is conducted in class and that students are informed of the serious attitude of the university towards any occasion of plagiarism. The students must also be told where the guidelines for the management of plagiarism can be found. The Urkund system enables the checking of references.

Teacher user manual

1. The teachers apply for an Urkund user right through the adjacent link (applying for Urkund user right).
2. The students submit their work through an Internet –page. In the same connection they accept the Urkund terms of use.
3. The Urkund system conducts the plagiarism analyses automatically as an overnight run.
4. The system sends the teacher an e-mail notice when it has received a document to be checked.
5. The teacher clicks in the e-mail message a link which allows access into the Urkund system and shows the analysis of the student’s document.
6. The teacher interprets the analysis and decides whether or not the document contained plagiarism.
