12 new research projects to study environmental change and creating sustainability

The University of Oulu is starting 12 new research projects on the University’s two strategic focus areas of research, “Creating sustainability by materials and systems” and “Earth and near-space system and environmental change”. The selections will strengthen the research focuses in accordance with the University’s strategy.

The research projects were selected through a peer-review by a scientific evaluation committee on the basis of the criteria similar to those used by the Adacemy of Finland. The central criteria include, the scientific merits of the applicant and position in the research field, the novelty and feasibility of the research plan, merits in the training of researchers, and the significance and impact of the planned research. The projects selected for the Thule Institute will be targeted for strategic support in the shape of a Ph.D. student and a post-doctoral positions. New research projects will receive approximately four million euros of funding in total.

The research projects and the related doctoral education will be implemented in research groups of the faculties of the University during term 2017-2020. The focus areas of research and their research projects are coordinated by the Thule Institute, the focus area unit of the University, which promotes multidisciplinary research in the University and innovations in the field of environment, natural resources and northern issues, as well as through doctoral education.

The 12 projects for the Thule Institute for the term 2017-2020 are:
