Department functions

Department of Mathematical Sciences is one of the eight departments in the Faculty of Science, University of Oulu.  The number of personnel is 60-70 and the number of students is around 600. The number of post-graduate students is 20-30. Departments annual intake is about 100 students. The department's stratedy highlights the following principles: the Department of Mathematical Sciences 

  • carries out high quality international research in mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics. To succeed in these areas, the collaboration with other researcher and institutions is essential. 
  • trains students into analytical and quantitative thinking together with skills to master the wide spectrum of jobs options.
  • trains enough mathematics subject teachers.
