The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers many kinds of support for students. The Department's amanuensis helps in various matters related to studies, including graduation. Student advisors and teacher tutors help in planning your studies. Don't hesitate to look for help, when needed.
The Department's student advisors are
- Tero Vedenjuoksu (mathematics, Erasmus coordinator)
- Esa Läärä (statistics)
Student advisors help you with issues related to studies, such as personal study plans (HOPS). Course matters should primarily be discussed with the lecturer.
A teacher tutor is appointed for each student. A teacher tutor is the student's contact between herself/himself and the teachers and the tutor guides students in different parts of their studies. In particular, a teacher tutor follows the progress of a student's studies and helps in planning them. In short, a teacher tutor is a student's personal study advisor.
Tutors offer help in mastering the mathematical content of the lecture courses. They can help you for example in solving the problems assigned by the lecturer. Tutoring takes place in the tutoring room (M204).
Orientation and student tutors
Student tutors are students who volunteer to help new students. They are trained to help incoming students to familiarize themselves with everyday routines in our Department. Note that student tutors have other duties (e.g. their own studies) as well, and therefore they may not be available for you at all times. This form of tutoring is part of Orientation (800008Y, 2 ECTS cr) and compulsory for all first year students.
Besides the Department of Mathematical Sciences, the University of Oulu offers various kinds of support. For more information, please visit the University's web page Supporting your studies.
