Research profile

Women's and Gender Studies does multidisciplinary reseach on issues of gender, gendered and sexualized violence and non-violence. Women's Studies is actively involved in international research groups and networks and research projects.

One of the major focus areas of research are in gendred and sexualised violence, as shown in the picture below.

 

Research group

In the Women’s and Gender Studies research group the most central themes are:

  • Sexualised and gendered bullying and violence, heterosexism in schools.
  • Other gender issues in education
  • The pedagogy of gender-sensitive non-violence
  • Sexualised and gendered harassment and heterosexism in other educational environ-ments
  • The environment of protracted conflict as a growing-up environment
  • The concepts of equality / equity, and possibilities for the promotion of equality / equity in educational environments
  • Segregation in educational environments and possibilities for decreasing segregation - education in the contexts of globalisation as analysed from the perspective of the northern periphery

Publication and conferences

During the years Women's and Gender Studies has coordinated and participated in several projects, networks and collaborations in aim to develop the work against vilolence and to prevent violence nationally and internationally. The fruits of collaborations in projects and seminars has been also collected in publications.

 

International network was invited in December 2008 to participate the international conference "From Violence to Caring - gendered and sexualized violence as the chllenge in the life-span". Arond 170 professionals, students and activists participated and some of the discussions was collected into a conference proceedigns. Additionally during the conference an abstract book was published.

 

 

 

 

 

The research and development projects have also resulted in publications such as:

- Leimattuna, kontrolloituna ja normitettuna. Sukupuolistunut ja seksualisoitunut väkivalta kasvatuksessa ja koulutuksessa (2003).

- Gendered and sexualised violence in Educational Environments (2003)

- Tasa-arvon haasteita globaalin ja lokaalin rajapinnoilla (2004)

- Koulutus, sukupuolisosialisaatio ja teknologia - näkökulmia segregaatioon (WomenIT) (2005)

 

 

The long stranding research of Doc. DEd Vappu Sunnari has been recently published in "Physical Sexual Harassment as experienced by Children at School in Northern Finland and North West Russia" (2009).
