Principal Investigator
Nønne Prisle is a Professor of atmospheric science and Academy of Finland Research Fellow (2017-2022). She is the principal investigator of several research projects, including European Research Council (ERC) starting grant (StG) project SURFACE (2017-2023) and Academy of Finland research projects SURFACE-IMPACT (2017-2023), ANTHRO-IMPACT (2018-2022) and BRILLIANT AI (2022-2026). Prof. Prisle obtained her Ph.D. in chemistry (2009) from University of Copenhagen (DK) and has been a postdoctoral researcher at the Finnish Meteorological Institute and Helsinki University’s Institute for Atmospheric Research (INAR) and a visiting researcher at Carnegie Mellon University (PA, USA), Uppsala University (SE), and Georgia Institute of Technology (GA, USA) before joining the University of Oulu (2016).
Nønne Prisle is an expert in nanoparticles and their atmospheric and climate effects. In recent years, she has focused on understanding the surface properties of particles and their interactions of water. She is the recipient of the 2020 Aerosologist award by the Nordic Society for Aerosol Research (NOSA) and was nominated to the international database of excellent female researchers AcademiaNet in 2021. She currently serves as vice-chair of the board of Finnish Synchrotron Radiation Users Organization (FSRUO), board member of the Finnish Association for Aerosol Research (FAAR) and associate editor and member of the editorial board of the journal Environmental Science: Atmospheres published by the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK), as well as several international scientific expert panels.
Among a wide range of activities to popularize science and atmospheric research, in particular, Nønne Prisle is a speaker of TEDxOulu – Arctic Matters (2020) and co-contributor to the podcast Intronauts - exploring brilliant science (Episode 4: Why having your head in the clouds is a good thing) and the graphic novel “Little Things” (2019) about her research. She has written several popular science articles and contributed to interviews in newspapers, magazines, books, and online media about her work.
Research
We work to understand the importance of aerosols for various processes at the heart of atmospheric chemistry and global climate. We integrate a wide range of levels of complexity, from molecular characterization and interactions, to single aerosol particles and global responses to aerosol driven processes.
Open Positions and Available Projects
Networks and Infrastructures
Our main focus is on aerosol effects on Earth’s atmosphere and their relevance for climate change. We work together with researchers from other fields to use our knowledge and methods in new and exciting ways.
